Greek, Greek Mythology, Roman Mythology, Late Roman
Examples: Dimos, Kalliope, Nikolaos, Theodotus, Castor, Hecuba, Nausicaa, Nox, Veritas, Pomona
Reasoning: The connection is clear, but mixing it with Roman mythology and in particular late Roman names gives a much wider pool from which to choose.
Surname Options: These are most often a reference to the Heroic Champions of their lineage who has fulfilled the ultimate goal of Kairos citizens and been turned into a Kollosus, but if a character does not claim such a link, they most often use their occupation to indicate the way in which they serve their nation.
For example – “Kalliope Sextus of the Line of Nox”, “Pomona Triarch Scions of Prospero”, “Nausicaa Decius of the House of Kalliope”, “Hecuba the Strategos”, “Castor the Mason”
Group structures
There is no set group structure within Kairos, except for groups that follow the regular military structure, with each group headed by a Demi-Stratego under the command of the Kairos Strategos.
Example groups
The Naxara Gymnasia is a group focused on training for competitive fighting. It is more relevant than ever now that sculptors and poets must become warriors to defend their homes.
Famed gladiator Tormelus the Stout ran this training school at an arena in the capital, Naxara, and brought his staff and students with him when he felt the call to come to Haven. They travel and train together, putting on show bouts for the rest of the camp for fun while teaching those who want to learn how to fight.
This is a group concept suitable for mixed-combat capable characters, with non-combatants having roles such as announcers, armourers and smiths and retired gladiators passing their knowledge on to the up-and-comers while combat characters can focus on the training and fighting aspects.
The Aerphos Wind Scriers are a collection of Oracles from the island state of Aerphos who travel together to share their interpretations of divine messages that can be interpreted from the Wind. Each member brings their divination tools with them, from flutes and wind chimes to coloured powders that can be scattered in the breeze; they interpret messages from the divine and share that information with the people of Kairos.
There is no group leader; it is simply a group of individuals travelling together with the same goals.
This group focuses heavily on interpersonal role-play and Oracle magic. Conflict could arise when group members try to prove their predictions and interpretations are the most accurate. This could be ideal for non-combat characters who wish to role-play as a group of friendly or respectful rivals.
The Heralds of Aphe are a group of Kairossi warriors who have come to fight and reclaim the parts of their homes held by the Corrupted. Brave warriors all, their martial prowess is where their strength lies. Trying to hold the centre of each battle, they lock shields and press on towards their enemy. Each person who travels with this group hopes for nothing more than to be immortalised as Prime Kolossi upon their death and, as such, lives their life to the fullest, so their story is worth celebrating when they are gone. Famed for glorious charges and more final last stands, they do not fear death on the field but welcome it.
The head of these soldiers, Demi-Strategos Glaucia, Scion of Mellandros, leads their troops into battle from the front. A warrior of great skill but some age, it is long past the time when they could have retired gracefully, but instead, they continue seeking the final story that will see them become a Prime Kolossi. As this is a military group, Glaucia sits at the head of the group and gives orders, which are obeyed when on duty. However, when off duty, the rest of the Heralds are free to do as they wish, whether in leisure time or practising their interests.
This is a combat-focused group, though there would be room for low/non-combat roles such as quartermaster or cook. Having individual interests outside of war is an easy way to give the group’s characters some additional depth, but if your focus is purely on combat, you could have fun role-playing around weapon and fitness training.
There could be some internal conflict as group members prepare to replace Glaucia and prove themselves worthy of leading the Heralds of Aphe in the future.
