The Fading

The Design of the Fading

The Fading is a game element affecting the world of Elandra. People’s knowledge and memory of the world are magically affected by the Fading in a variety of odd ways. The Fading affects both people and documents of all types. There isn’t a specific list of things affected by the Fading but it can be used for why people are unable to remember elements of the world they live in, after all we only play these characters a few times a year. People can relearn things and won’t be unable to interact with a concept that’s been forgotten (or that the player may not have known about in the first place).
As the Fading is a game element in a game where discovery and exploration are intended to be themes it may be possible to investigate it and recovering lost knowledge due to the Fading is something characters can try to do! Information lost to the Fading is
Lands that have been taken by the Corrupted are also affected. Between the years-long war and the Fading information on lands the nations formerly held is rare and in some cases conflicting. Some characters may remember details one way and others may have different opinions. Some may have no knowledge entirely on a subject.

Its possible to play characters with a variety of knowledge levels at Menhirs Fate. We are aware there is a huge amount of potential knowledge to consume and we’re keen to see where people take their characters within the world. The Fading is designed to represent an opportunity to rediscover lost knowledge but also allow people to jump into the world without need to know every single thing about it and we encourage people to not look down on characters because they may not have read as much of the wiki as another person.

The below info is available on most nations recent history pages with some tweaks on how it may have specifically affected a given nation

The History of the Fading

Immediately following the Pact, the event known as the Fading has further prevented new progress in the nations; this was some sort of unknown magical calamity which affected and continues to affect the spread of information and its retention – both on written and in the minds of all people across Elandra.

Land beyond the boundaries of the Corruption is no longer remembered as it should be; it is as if the memory of it has been washed away, and the records of such are blank or missing too. Information from before the Pact is similarly difficult to find, and impossible to recall for those who lived through it.

Other information is similarly missing from recall by all the remaining powers of Elandra, though some snippets of the past are found in oral traditions, festivals and the echo of memory on culture of each nation.

The study of history has been devastated by this calamity, as it is no longer possible to be certain of fact with so many relied-upon sources being unavailable. The record-keepers and historians of every nation have tried to maintain some form of order, but there is a lot beyond mortal knowledge that was once known to all, and it is an ongoing exercise to share what little remains.

Scholars generally blame the Corrupted for having caused this – severing connection to whatever is beyond their borders using foul magic of some kind, but the search to recover what has been lost is a massive international effort.

How can we help?
